It is relatively easy to shank a hoe with a round eye.

The handle for a hoe with a round eye is always conical in shape. This means that there is a thinner stem start and a thicker stem end.

The hoe head is pushed over the thinner side of the handle up to the thickened end of the handle. For handles with drilled holes for hanging the hoe or with engravings, the hoe head should be aligned at 90 degrees to the engraving / drilled hole. This is purely a visual matter and is not important for the function.

The thick end of the handle is then struck several times in a vertical direction (from top to bottom) on a wooden board or beam. By stopping the handle abruptly, the hoe head connects positively with the wooden handle.

Tip: If you then immerse the stem head in water for a few minutes, the wood swells and the head sits particularly firmly.

Place the axe handle on a wooden beam at a comfortable working height. Place the eye of the axe head on the handle. If necessary, slightly break the edges of the upper end of the stem with a cutter knife to make it easier to put the head on.

Then turn the axe upside down, place the head on the beam, and use a mallet to drive the handle straight in, piece by piece, until it is flush with the eye of the head.

When the head is flush with the shaft, drive in the wooden wedge and then drive in the fastening sleeves. If necessary, remove any protruding material from the wooden wedge.

Ash handles are strong and elastic. Impacts are cushioned by the wood, which is easy on the joints. A complete breakage of the ash stem is rather rare, but occurs especially when the wood dries out. There is then a risk of injury here from the uncontrolled axe head. Ash handles are made from domestic ash and are less expensive than handles made from hickory.

Hickory is a North American tree of the walnut genus. The wood is perfect for heavy-duty stems. It is firm, flexible and elastic and absorbs hard shocks well. Due to its long wood fibers, it can withstand a much higher load than the already stable ash wood. Hickory handles almost never break completely, providing a safety advantage over ash handles.

Garden tools and forestry tools with wooden handles should be stored in dry and unheated rooms, barns or garden sheds. When stored in heated rooms, the stem dries out, loses elasticity and breaks more easily than when stored properly.

Garden tools and forestry equipment must be cleaned of coarse dirt after use. Damp or wet tools should be dried to prevent rust. Lubricate moving parts with non-resinous oil.

Solid metal parts should be rubbed with linseed oil before winter storage for better preservation. Treat wooden handles with linseed oil or wood oil if necessary.

Caution: Cloths soaked with linseed oil can ignite if stored incorrectly. It is best to rinse the cloths with water and spread them out to dry. Alternatively, store the wipes in a glass jar with a closed lid.
