Hand-forged forestry tools from the German tool manufacturer Krumpholz. Krumpholz has been forging since 1799 and is still family owned. Axes, hatchets, sappies and many other useful forestry tools are forged from Swedish steel at the highest quality level. Durable, resilient ash wood or hard durable hickory wood is used for the wooden handles and grips. Best quality for highest demands in forestry work.
Notes Ash handle:
Ash wood handles are strong and elastic. Impacts are cushioned by the wood, which is easy on the joints. A complete breakage of the ash stem is rather rare, but occurs especially when the wood dries out. There is then a risk of injury here from the uncontrolled axe head. Ash handles are made from domestic ash and are less expensive than handles made from hickory.
Notes hickory handle:
Hickory is a North American tree of the walnut genus. The wood is perfect for heavy-duty stems. It is firm, flexible and elastic and absorbs hard shocks well. Due to its long wood fibers, it can withstand a much higher load than the already stable ash wood. Hickory handles almost never break completely, providing a safety advantage over ash handles.
Hints for stemming:
Place the axe handle on a wooden beam or boards at a comfortable working height. Place the eye of the axe head on the handle. If necessary, slightly break the edges of the upper end of the stem with a cutter knife to make it easier to put the head on.
Then turn the axe over, place the head on the beam, and use a mallet to drive the handle straight in, piece by piece, until it is flush with the eye of the head.
When the head is flush with the stem, drive in the wooden wedge and finally drive in the drive-in sleeves. If necessary, remove any protruding material from the wooden wedge.
Care instructions
Dry wood after use. Storage in dry and unheated rooms, barns or garden sheds. When stored in heated rooms, the stem dries out and loses elasticity. The stem can then break more easily than with proper storage. If necessary, lightly treat the handle with a wood oil or linseed oil.
